What are Surplus Funds?
A foreclosure or tax deed surplus fund, also known as "excess funds" or overage, arises when a property is sold at a tax deed or foreclosure auction for an amount that exceeds the amount owed by the property owner. After the auction, the overage amount is held by the county or local government, waiting to be claimed by the former property owner or any other interested party with a legal claim to the surplus funds.
